'Mobile Suit Gundam' Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino Tackles 2 New Projects!

Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the 'Mobile Suit Gundam' anime franchise, announced that he would be working on two projects this year.  The first is the Gundam film Gundam: G no Reconguista to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the first Gundam TV series, which is schedule to hit theaters in Japan this Fall.  This film production will be directed by Tomino, and will be his first since his last TV series project 'Turn A Gundam'.

Gundam: G no Reconguista (Gundam Reconguista in G) will debut this Fall. It is set in "Reguild Century," the era set after the Universal Century, and it will follow the adventures of a pilot trainee named Beruri Zenamu in Capital Guard, an organization protecting a space elevator. The character designer is Kenichi Yoshida, and the mecha designer are Akira Yasuda, Ippei Gyōbu, and Kimitoshi Yamane. Yuugo Kanno is scoring the music.

The second project will be will be a collaboration effort between Tomino and the U.S. Hollywood studio, Legacy Effects LLC.  Legacy Effects was founded by leading staff members of Stan Winston Studio, the company formed by the legendary special-effects supervisor Stan Winston (Terminator, Jurassic Park, Aliens franchises). Even after Winston passed away in 2008, his partners continued to work on the suits and makeup in such films as Avatar, The Avengers, The Hunger Games, Iron Man 3, and Pacific Rim.

It has not been announced what this second project would be, but it will be a remake of his previous work.  No further information was given if this would be a Gundam related project.

Could this remake be Gundam related?  If so, what do you hope to see?  Leave us your thoughts in the comment area below.

  1. Tomino has previously considered revisiting Ideon with all the new animation tech, deaths and all. Let's hope it's Ideon dammit!

  2. Let's hope Tomino is back to his "sober and sane" self and not in his destructive mode, killing characters and franchises...
