According to this and other threads unboxing the kit, the leds'd only work when it's attached to the stand. Or am I wrong?

Deleteyeah, the cables is running in pole stand connecting between the body and the external power adaptor which is placed in display platform.
btw, the adaptor using 4 AA batteries to activate
not really the stand but the battery holder which is hidden beneath the stand, so actually you can have the leds glowing without the stand but instead a battery holder attached. though the wire seems short.
