The Master Grade Line to be Revolutionized?

The Master Grade Line to be Revolutionized?
There is a countdown currently going on at Bandai Hobby Site that points to a big announcement regarding the future of the Master Grade line!

A modified version of the banner image seems to show off the cockpit of the RX-78-2 Gundam, which has been used several times to start a new line. I've been hoping to see the detail and color separation that makes the RG line so great show up in the MG line, will this happen? Or is it something completely new and unique??

We will get the news at the Shizuoka Hobby Show, which starts next week on May 16th! Gundam Guy will be there in person to bring us all the news as quickly as possible! Stay tuned!

Original Banner Image (go to Bandai Hobby Site to see the coundown).
The same image with the levels changed a bit to bring out the lighter image.
Click on the banner and you get this screen, the only options are to click "Back" or "Home" which takes you back to the main page.
I can't wait to see what Bandai has in store for us this summer!

    1. pshhh most unlikely, that wont bring any significant change in the MG line that they were stating. IMO this will be an OLD school MS.

    2. Yeah, probably would start with the RX-78-02 from Gundam the Origin.

    2. I believe they will start 1/100 scale RG line.

with the success of current 1/144 RG, it's reasonable enough for bandai to expand to 1/100 scale.

    3. It says MG, not RG.

  5. I would really like to see what will happen...personally i can't really think of much more than can be done for the mg line besides doing what they did with the rg line being so detailed and multi-color piece's. None the less next thursday will be interesting.

  6. MG evolution? hmmm, i'm curious..... could it be that bandai is merging the current MG engineering with the color separation from RG and with movable finger/LED head from PG?
well,nu ver ka already did that though. if that's how the upcoming MGs gonna be, then this is surely a good news

  7. God, I hope they're not planning to model the MG line after the RG line. I shudder at the thought of colour separation and detail vomit.

    1. And how the hell is that meant to work?

      Delete
    2. Maybe he means pre-cut parts, placed in a clear plastic holder like the robot damashii toys. Having machines do this aside from injecting plastic into moulds seems plausible enough.

      Delete
    3. Think of Kshatriya from Elyn. The parts comes without the game. Make it easier to build the thing.

      Delete
    4. It can never be done good enough on such a MASSIVE scale that gunpla is made.
Did you know it takes 17 seconds to make a runner of parts?
It makes no financial or economic sense to cut out up to 30 pieces per runner.
On a MG kit that would drive the price up far too much.

And the cuts would never be clean enough or if a blade becomes dull people will get kits with horrible nub gashes.

      Delete
    5. runner-less/gate-free = no sprue leftover = less plastic = less production cost for bandai.

runner-less = quicker to finish MG = people will buy more MG = more profit for bandai.

and who say it need to be cut by machine ?
it can be molded without sprue, you know.
you'll still need to clean up/cut excessive parts though.

maybe, it still need to be cut.
but if the benefit far outweigh the cost (for long term), I'm sure bandai will do it.

      .

      personally I don't like runner-less kit,
but from bandai perspective (as a profit-based company), that makes a lot of sense.

bandai didn't care if you spent months or years to build an MG.
bandai just want to sell more and more model kit every year.

bandai know people has high satisfaction on MG line.
so they will keep that satisfaction factor (no pre-built/pre-assembled parts),
while try to 'help' kit modelers out there by making runner-less kit,
hoping that modeler able to finish MG kit faster, and will buy next MG lot faster too..

      Delete
    6. Do you even know the function of a runner?
Its to allow the molding of as many parts as possible at the same time.
Molding so many parts without runners is incredibly complex and still wont get rid of plastic that needs to be cleaned off (there has to be a certain amount of extra plastic per piece to ensure the mold has filled)
It would increase production time and make it more confusing for people to build as the parts wont be neatly numbered on the runner.

And quicker to build MGs wont have any effect on sales. Its peoples budgets that decide that.

    7. Plastic cost is nothing compare to cost of expensive mold for each parts. So this idea is impossible.

    3. But if they used pre-assembled parts like the 1.5/OYW Gundam's legs, I bet MG V2 would be easier to make and much more stable.

      Delete
    4. if possible that the hands will be assembled by the person themselves, that would be great. As of now we have preassembled hands, i dont prefer these but as the anon above said, anymore outside of the hands would be bad. I didnt like the rx 78 2 1.5 because of the assembled limbs. i like the feeling of knowing i assembled everything.

    A) [RG]fied [MG] line. Meaning: Advanced MS joint, Color separation parts, large amount of decals.

    B) Gate-free parts. Think of Kshatriya from Elyn.

    C) All the Kits produced will have the same height.

I sincerely wants B. That would makes it easier for us to build or paint our Kit.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sorry to be so harsh but all 3 are pointless and never going to be done.

A: Part separation maybe, but advanced MS joints? No way in high hell. Thats a step backwards and completely against what a MG is.

B: Gate free parts costs time and money, Bandai are not going to do that for a bunch of lazy "modellers". No one deserves to be called a modeller if they are that lazy.

C: Why the hell would bandai change from having everything at 1:100 scale to show you the height differences and just start making everything the same? What would be the point of owning a Sazabi if the F91 from the same grade was just as tall?

      Delete
    2. Oh, no worries. Just like I said, it's all merely my guesses. Whether it comes true or not surely its all in Bandai hands.

      Delete
    3. a) large decals, hav been done b4 (ver ka kits) so whats so revolutionary about that? Ms joint like RG is a step backward, hav u build rx78 1.5 b4? Just cuz its use by RG doesn't mean its more advance in comparison to current MG tech. Hav u ever thought that the RG scale is too small to implement functional buildable inner frame like MG and thus hav to rely on prebuild frame? This idea of urs is not revolutionary, its a regression for god sake.
      b) what benefit does it gives? we can already cut out excess gates cleanly with a good cutter so whats the point other then to cater to lazy ppl?
      c) same height? hav u forgotten what does the term SCALE and 1/100 means? Hav u forgotten MG is made to be as accurate as possible?

to be honest all ur point doesn't make sense

  17. Oh god, it's happening...we're probably going to get a standard frame that we slap parts onto in order to keep the heights at 1/100 scale but, it'll be just like the fighting frame they tried back for G Gundam that never took off. Kind of like how the Shin Musha has those parts for the heel to make it taller.

    1. Addendum:

This could mean no more transformable suits...which, while waaaaay more stable would be unfortunate for people who want to transform them. So, I don't know.

I really hope it's just a Ver. 3.0 type of thing. No real messing around with the formula as it is.

      Delete
    2. They've been using a standard frame for the Wing EW kits and for the original five SEED gundams for some time. This is nothing new.

I doubt they would make a standard frame for all master grades. Would make building gunpla much less interesting, and would leave less room for bandai's master grade teams to show off. Sounds like a step back

      Delete
    3. u cant hav standard frame for all kits, the size is different. If u do that then what u gonna do bout big kits like sazabi and small kits like f91? u gonna make it same height? Then the term SCALE 1/100 will be rendered meaningless. Its called scale for a reason....

if u r saying similar kit from the same universe sharing same innerframe, tey r already doing that with seed and wing line so whats so revolutionary about that?

      Delete
    4. I hope you guys are right. Not exactly, you're talking about recycling entire frames. I don't know what to compare it to, except maybe the Frame Arms from Koto (could be wrong there), where they all have the same skeletal frame, then the inner frame, and then the outer shell. So, it's a three stage build.

As for the scale, they'd have to use extender parts for heights and etc. I'm gonna stop because the more I think about it, the more it makes sense!

Anyway, yes. I hope this isn't the case.

      Delete
    5. to anon 8:51

I do not think you know what you are talking about, do you even know what the Scale of 1/100 means? keeping MGs at same height would be stupid because they're all in the scale of 1/100 of their original height.

      Delete
    6. Yes, I understand that. I'm already leaving this alone. I can't get my point across so that's that.

      Delete
    7. @ Anon 12:03

Some of us know what you mean. You're saying if they used the same frame for everything, they could use certain parts to extend the height and with, for taller and wider kits.

They have done this in the real grade line. RG Destiny Gundam uses the same frame as the Freedom and Justice. But since Destiny is a more filled out suit, and has some parts that are bigger, some of the frame was X out and different parts were used. Same with the Wing EW kits and SEED GAT suits.

What I am saying is that I don't think Bandai will do that. And if they did they would lose a lot of us, because it would take the fun out of building the kits and make the frame less enjoyable with every build.

And coming up with a frame that could be used across the different Gundam Universes and between the various sizes (16 meter to 23 meter suits) and styles just seems like it would be very hard to pull off

      Delete
    8. Yes, thank you!

Agreed, it would be hard to pull off, but if they try it and it doesn't take off, then one or two kits aren't a big deal. Know what I mean? The fighting frame for the G Gundam kits was hyped up, it flopped but, they released three kits and two recolors. So, they could just be testing the water.

We'll know for sure by the end of this week. Thanks for the reply.

      Delete
    9. I am glad to see someone has similar idea on the frame as well :)

I think it is possible Bandai will introduce a frame system. And yes different MS size does mean different frame size is needed, but Bandai is already doing this in their Gunpla builder offering, which offers Large, Normal and Small. The minor height variation could also be addressed by smart design in frames tweaks.

With a frame system they could use more durable materials and very possibly prebuild construction too. This has benefits for example stronger joints.

With a frame standard in place, design difference between MS could then be handled more efficiently.

It would be similar to what Kotobukiya is already doing, the Frame Architect Type-001. But with better design perhaps?

However, I am not sure I like to see this happen... its becoming BIY (build it yourself) action-figure...

  18. Ugh. Why do we need ANOTHER RX-78-2 Master Grade? Unless this is the RX-78-02 from Gundam Origin, I will be disappointed. The good thing is I think 3.0 style hands will be standard from here on out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. why the hell are you guys asking for runner-less/gate-free kits? that's simply removing the joy of cleaning nubs. don't be a lazy bum

and without runners, model kits are reduced to mere toys. do you even model?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I disagree. Modelling doesn't always equal cutting up gates, then cleaning up nubs. There's always painting (masking), making panel lines (scribing), modifying (cutting or adds). Just because the kit comes runner-less doesn't mean we can't do all things I've just mentioned. Imho, it makes us easier to get to the modelling works right away.

      Delete
    2. TO Dyan:

YET cutting parts from the runners is a big part of being a gunpla modelling, consider those who only do snap fit builds. It's one of the most fun things in building gunpla and removing it would make it more boring. it makes it easier? It's already easy enough unless you're a lazy fucktard.

      Delete
    3. Exactly my words. I don't have space and time to paint my kits but I enjoy as hell cutting the pieces off the frames, edging them and putting together - lately I've spent a whole week dealing with Nu VerKa and I'm extremely pleased with my *simplistic* effects.

Though, if the general idea is to unify the frame I think I'll drop buying gunpla - what's the point then of investing 50 bucks in something you build in 2 hours? The gunpla building process has to last for as long as possible.

      Delete
    4. yup totally agree with you there Lukasz

    5. do you really think that the runners are there to make our life difficult??
go buy a model kit, take out the runner, look at it, and think about its REAL purposes.
      sheesh....

      Delete
    6. zoidiect, I think you're the one that lazy.
you're not working hard enough for life do you ? hence you still have lot of time to meddle with model kits.

people that works hard (at office, or at field works), only have limited time for model kits.

because of busy job recently, even I can only finish one MG every 3 months (6 months with painting).
still have dozens of MG waiting to be built.
I would be more than happy if bandai can give way to reduce time building MG kit.

      Delete
    7. Cutting the pieces can sometimes be fun, but basically I've found it to be a love/hate thing depending on the part. Some gates are too thick and leave a horrible nub mark even after you sand or file it while others are so thin they break off during shipment. Markers or paint solves this but that's an additional cost. If Bandai can somehow make their thickness uniform as part of their "revolution" then I wouldn't mind.

I can understand where Anon 3:33 is coming from. Recently I've had to put a lot of things in the back burner since I'm busier than ever, including gunpla building. This does not mean, however, that I plan on giving on my hobby. So anything that can speed up the building process is welcome. As Dyan said there's more to gunpla building than cutting parts off a runner. Some kits like the Nu or the Zeydra are a joy to put together due to their unique, clever build. Lining them also is almost as fun as painting them.

There's nothing wrong with a suggestion such as runner-free model building if the builder thinks its a good idea. Not everyone has a lot of free time on their hands. With Bandai pumping out kits that tug at our heartstrings *Cough* gear doga *Cough*,and wallet, but not enough time to build them its only natural to think of a solution for their problem even if its just speculation.

      Delete
  20. Maybe they have found a way to reduce on waste plastic, like all those trees everyone ends up with, thus helping reduce plastic used and maybe cut down on cost?

If the gates are less thick that means less waste plastic and smaller nubs which is great for us, less time cleaning up kits.

  23. Chill everybody. . . . let take a second to think about this in a positive way, instead of coming up with stuff that we wouldn't like and getting angry about it. . . .

Some of post here on GG say that a "large" MG will be announced at the show and some sources say "big".

If it's a "large" kit, it would probably mean we aren't getting a new RX-78, but something like a new MG Sazabi, Jagd Doga, Freedom ver RM, or Providence, new Hyaku Shiki. Which are all things that a lot of fans would enjoy.

If it's a "big" announcement, it could be something like the RX-78-02 from Origin, a new Ground Gundam, new EZ8, Wing Gundam Zero, or Jagen. Something that would show the MG line reaching a new milestone.

It probably won't even be a big deal. Exciting yes, but probably not game changing

  24. Am I the only one wishing it's not relating to Gundam MGs specifically, but that it'll be a new sub-line focusing on a slightly different style? I know it's likely never going to happen, but I'm hoping that one day, Bandai will start making Super Robot kits again, like an updated version of the Mechanic Collection (MechaColle) line.

There's definately a market for super robots. There's a lot of toys, games, and other assorted merchandise, but in terms of model kits, the Super Robot selection is remarkably slim. I'm one of those people who prefers the satisfaction that comes with building the models, but doesn't have any real interest in the toys. I'd like to have the option of building a Black Getter than having to settle on one out of a number of expensive, pre-built action figures because I can't own a Black Getter otherwise.

    1. That's pretty much what they call "retarded". A non Gundam-related to revolutionize the MG line? absurd!

    2. It's not totally out of the question though. While it is true that when we hear "Master Grade", the first thing that comes to mind is Gundam, but there's also the MG Patlabor kits, and MG Figurise line that focuses on characters instead of mecha. Also notice that none of the three images we see say anything about Gundam specifically.

If it does turn out to be a new line, there's a chance that some of the new technology that may be incorporated in these new kits could be carried over to the Gundam line. A good example would be the aforementioned MechaColle line. From what I hear, the first four kits in the line had an inner frame. Though they all shared the same frame, and it was fairly simple and unremarkable in most aspects, especially when compared to the much larger and more expensive Perfect Grade line, but it was also sturdy. It was able to handle most of the Scranders and other large parts that some would normally assume would cause weight issues on any other "frameless" kit made at the time, and with fairly few ill effects. Even though the MechaColle line mostly died down after only a few months and four kits, only to have the name to reemerge for a special occasion or two since, their inner frame was refined and incorporated into the Master Grade Fighting Action G Gundam kits, and they are considered to be the precursor to the now standard Master Grade inner frames.

  25. Those claiming that the lack of sprues/runners will bring production costs down don't have any idea what they're talking about, lol. Plastic itself is cheap; what makes plamo expensive are the dies and molds used to shape the parts. Take runners out of the production process and you'll end up using - and fabricating - more molds and dies.

Take the MG Delta Plus, for example (closest manual I could grab): it has about 200 unique parts (over 300 in total) spread over 12 unique runners (16 total). Try to imagine how much it would cost to make over 200 small molds and dies as opposed to just 12 big ones, with each mold and die milled from tool steel, and would have ejector pins and other devices. You would then probably argue that the molds are reusable (and indeed they are), but now I want you to imagine the logistics of such a system: Where do they store these 200 molds? How do they transport 200 small molds? How much will it cost to clean and maintain 200 molds? Given the number of Bandai's injection molding machines (even if they do have 200, I doubt they're going to allocate all to just the Delta Plus), how much time would they waste changing molds, time which they could have otherwise used for other models? Not to mention that molding barely takes 30 seconds, and I highly doubt a changeover can be done in less time; in other words, Bandai would end up doing more set-up work than actual plastic molding. It's a freaking logistic nightmare, and this is just for ONE Delta Plus.

If you still don't get it: what you're proposing is more expensive.

And even if Bandai does use 3d printing (and I doubt it has matured enough to allow for economical mass production), yeah, you'd have no sprues... but then you'd have to deal with supports. And have you even thought of how they would package 300++ individual sprue-less parts? Good luck with that.

Forgive me for the rant, but the manufacturing engineer in me just got ticked off. :P

may i also add that the benefit of sprue-less parts is virtually non-existence. So what if there is abit of nub marks, can be easily fix with a good cutter, sand paper and patience. If u dunno how to do it then learn, if u r lazy then its ur own personal problem not Bandai. Will this feature draws more ppl into buying its product? No. Will ppl care whether its sprue-less or not? No. So why should Bandai bother spending money and time developing such feature that dun add any real value to its product?

Also Bandai themselves produces cutter, sprue-less will render their cutter utterly pointless. U think Bandai will screw their own product just to satisfy some of u? U think Bandai is a charity organization? Tey will want to maximize their profit and that includes their supplementary products like cutter, Bandai is not that dumb.

    3. I totally agree tl;dr! But after reading a couple of sentences I get what you're talking about but dont agree per se. I have to dump massive bags of excess runners a month and it is a total waste. If bandai could develop a way of removing the runner, while still using the injection process but cutting the parts off (while still hot or sumesuch) would be cool, and at the same time recycling the excess, also cool.

But then on the converse side, when you remove the runners from the equation, there's not much left to the hobby, and the line between model kit and mecha figure begins to blur.

What I hope for is more parts and detail. As well as a total lack of foil stickers and those shitty decal stickers. Water slides only please. Either that or they'll paint some parts like kotobukiya.

    4. @Gai Kotsu:
It's easy to think that runners are wasteful; however, are you sure that the elimination of runners would not be more wasteful? You're asking Bandai to do more things for you; doing more things requires more energy. Therefore, any benefit generated by eliminating runners would only be cancelled out - if not outweighed - by the additional energy required to process more parts. And oh, to do more things Bandai would incur more expenses; expenses that they would only pass to you by raising their prices. I can cut parts off the runners myself; I don't know about you, but I don't want to pay Bandai for something that I can do fine by myself.

And how hard would it be to build a Master Grade without runners? Trust me, I know: I have a 1/144 Woundwort garage kit and had to compare parts to the minuscule illustrations in the manual. It barely has 50 parts, let alone 300. :P

tl;dr: Runners are actually more beneficial to you than you think.

I would totally support a runner return scheme of sorts, though. And Bandai should explore the feasibility of Ecopla MGs made from those returned runners.

    5. I agree with Gai that some parts being pre-painted would be a good thing but since this is MG what parts exactly would need painting by default? The Nu ver Ka. color separation was so good they had to dumb it down with those stickers on the legs and side skirts. They were good but stickers nonetheless that merited their own parts.

  27. pre-build inner frame would be interesting :-?

    1. They already did that. Its neat but takes the fun out of building the inner frame yourself.

    2. A monkey can be trained to follow instructions, it doesn't make you special to assemble a frame for yourself. Building a plastic kit does not make you the chief engineer on the Argama, get over yourself.

    3. Oh someone sounds butthurt.
Why does someone need to get over themselves if they just enjoy assembling parts themselves to get a greater appreciation of the engineering that went into the kit.

What the fuck makes you so high and mighty to compare other people to monkeys.
And why the hell are you even here if you are just being a condescending prick?

  28. My guess is that part of it will involve changing the design and engineering processes so more than one mg kit can be released per month. Although there probably will be some other changes to the construction of the kits themselves.

  29. My guess is that they will make more parts instead of less. Usually when they say something big is coming we get, inner frames, new hands, clear parts, and other stuff. Maybe a new gundam series is coming out (hope not) and already gettin the mg treatment. lol doubt it but I hope they make the mg's more complex and harder to build not easier, wtf if I wanted an easier build I would buy a lower grade.

    1. ^can't agree more, nu ver ka already gave us not only details but also the complexity of building the kit itself. if that what bandai means as a revolution then i'm curious about what kind of complexity they can give to the future kits, specially with a "small-sized" gundams like those from wing series

  30. Consider this. Perfect grades have been on the decline lately and master grades have become freaking amazing. PG's however are the only way to get QUALITY 1/60th scale kits. My guess for Bandai's "big" release, a new line of Master grade 1/60th scale kits. Makes sense to me unless PG's come back with a vengeance and all we get is a set of 3.0 oldies (which I don't have a problem with).

    1. Why would they rebrand PGs and up the quality when they can jsut up the quality and keep the PG title?

  31. For those who want runnerles, try this. Cut all parts from your unbuilt Master Grade. How can you identify each parts without numbers on runner? Maybe you want something like this.

  34. Just release a Mg Sazabi Ver Ka or 2.0 and I'll be beyond happy

  35. I think it could be a new product range at 1:35 scale, which focus on internal structure like cockpit and mechanics, etc. It will be sold in modules blocks (Chest, head, body, legs), and to be joined together to form a much larger model.

This is what PG was originally intended for, but at a cheaper price (per module) because we only pay for what we need for the project. This would be ideal to attract some military modellers, and perhaps kit-bashers.

The cockpit models would be welcomed by many modeller too.

    1. HAHAHA! That's what I also thought, kinda like the HG EX kits which is a High Grade in 1/60 scale

    2. Yes indeed.

I think it is also possible to keep MG at 1:100 scale, and to introduce a 'frame' system which is made of more durable materials so to overcome the weakness joint issue, and additional mechanics modules and external armor which are sold as MS pack could then be attached to create different MS, because most MS share very similar frames, and differs in module placement and exterior cosmetic.

This would improve the playability, pack in more details and semi working mechanics, and would be great for either diorama builder, or anyone who used to complain models are fragile when compared to action figures (robot damashii line).

Err.. I would have mix feelings if this does happen.. I find myself having more fun building HG kits than MG kits these days, only because HG provides me more room to improve the kit :)

    1. Totally agree, the only thing that can TOP Nu ver Ka even a little would be MG sazabi Ver Ka since even wih Nu's awesomeness, there were still some flaws and it wasn't perfect. Imagine Bandai would make a "Perfect Kit" with no significant flaws, and would be better than Nu Ver ka.
      That aside,
We don't have any clues what the hell this would be, all we have are speculations and raging arguments, some retarded wishlists and some logical predictions. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE HELL THIS WOULD BE, all we can do now is ready our wallets.

    2. What about MG Gundam Mk-II 2.0? That didn't have any glaring flaws I can think of.

    3. @anon 9:46 - Nothing can ever prepare your wallet. Bandai utilizes rush tactics when it comes to gunpla.

    4. to anon 12:11 Gunpla that has no flaws AND better than Nu Ver Ka.
So Mk-II doesnt count, tho I agree MG Mk-II is perfect as it is.

  37. I think Bandai will release additional scaled accessories every new MG release. I.e. people, building parts, tools etc. This way we can buy more MG merchandise not just for the mecha but also for expanding the collection items.
