ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that. The MG Geara Doga Full Frontal custom complete with sleeves looks mighty dandy. The other entries (the ones I can see for now) also have nice paint jobs and decal work.

DeleteA flawless paintjob and removal of flaws is what the judges also look for.
Between mountains of pla-plate and good custom paintjobs, I'll chose the paintjobs.
DeleteI'm sorry don't mean to be rude but the Sinanju won best of show?! What about that any other one of the winners, they did decals and panel lines. wow what where they thinking?
ReplyDeleteWell, if you knew anything about painting, you'd know that painting in those grey rectangles is more difficult than applying decals. The Stein had much more work put into it.
DeleteThose grey rectangles are stupidly easy to do. All he did was put a bunch of rectangular pieces of tape all over the primer and then just paint white over it.
DeleteDecals are actually harder to do, especially on uneven surfaces and making them match up with the other side.
If Lechku knew anything at all he would know Angel was the previous year's U.S. winner.
DeleteWell, tbh, despite knowing the effort required for those decals, the white Sinanju is more pleasing to the eye than some of the other works. Maybe it's just the relaxing color combination.
DeleteBut my favorite among these is still that Geara Doga. Love em red suits.
Its my understanding that the Stein received higher marks as an overall package because of the Bandai Judging Criteria. Chris' Burning Justice would receive higher marks for creativity but not necessarily execution, he was trying new techniques that I don't think I've ever seen anywhere else. Robert's Zaku II, Li's MkII, and Dan's Geara Doga (with scratch built sleeves) were exquisitely clean works of art.
DeleteStryder's Stein likely scored mid-to-high maybe not beating any entry for highest score in any one category but scoring highest in total. In the end it was the judges' decision and Bandai's criteria. I don't think its particularly fair to diminish Stryder's win.

I do agree the stein's paint job isn't really that impressive, tape over and airbrush the whole area, remove tape. Putting white strip decal on sinanju(NOT stein) over mountains of curved surface(the leg booster strip) is 10x harder.

Look at the other entries at NYCC. Clearly these are the best of that crop
DeleteI gotta question the judges' decision... How is a Stein that does not have a single panel line or decal, win Best of Show? I can maybe understand not decaling (modeler probably wanted a clean look) but panel lining is as basic a technique as removing a part from a sprue. Even snappers and lazy modelers use Gundam markers.

Well considering the Geara Doga wasn't completely painted, and the RG zaku had paint problems on the leg, I think they flipped a coin because they were all about the same.

DeletePersonally, I suck at panel lining so much that my models end up looking like a big mess once I'm done with em. I avoid it like a plague.
@anon 8:55 That's not a very good excuse. If you're not willing to take risk to practice a very basic technique, you will never become a better modeler. Everyone breaks a few eggs before making the perfect omelet :)
DeleteFor the Sinanju, schedule might be the reason. But as for the other one, some people have really bad shaky hands for some reason or another. Over avoiding a technique or choosing a new hobby, I'd advise the former.

ReplyDeleteSome regions dont even have GBWC - and we get to see such"creations" from one of the lucky regions...(ill be honest they are still better than mine attempts, but they still lacking).

I've seen better display in the model kit shops in my area. Maybe I'm a hater but this isn't a local community competition, it's a global GBWC, you WANT only the best builds of the year to represent. Keep that nub marks, seamlines, shoddy paintworks and sloppy modifications at home. If you can't take the criticisms, it only means your kits doesn't belong in the first place.
ReplyDeleteAnd painting stripes isn't hard, considering that there's a thing called digital camo, which looks much better too instead of random stripes.

Urgh another thing is, what's with the Best Large Scale (Not even a PG), Best Small Scale and Best whatever. Did they have to give prizes to anyone for participating or something. /malice

Bandai created a bunch of categories to reward people and give free kits, whats your fucking problem with that?
Best large scale went to the best kit in 1/100 or larger (obviously). It just happened to be a MG because there were no PGs entered. Best small scale went to the best 1/144 scale or smaller and there were a few more HG kits given to people who made kits that the judges liked.
Bandai dont have to be a bunch of greedy pricks and only give 1 prize.
