I think the power of Moonlight of Butterfly will have less impact if Turn A use Okawara design, it funny-yet unique head that make impact "don't judge book by it cover". So yes, me still prefer it's current design
...So, why did Okawara do this? It's not as if Turn A is in the forefront of everybody's minds, let alone popular... But then again, given how everyone does like the same ol' (as proven in the SEED designs that followed Turn A, and the couple of recent comments here), I guess people might eat it up. *sigh*
What a way to kill the unique and wonderful aesthetics of Turn A, Okawara. This is especially proven with the Mead/Shigeta design shown immediately below the head design. The unique, majestic, victorian aesthetics are pretty much gone with Okawara's version. (I don't recall Katoki making a redesign himself, though I've seen an alledged one that yielded in the same mediocre results.)
Okawara, I like you for making the RX-78, but don't turn Turn A into it. (Though with some modifications, it would look closer to his Wing Gundam Zero head design.)
And if you go to the Twitter page linked to find the latest drawing of the entire design, it seems proven ten fold; the basic design is essentially there, but re-proportioned with fewer panels/panel lines in the armor. The proportions make the design look like it ate too many sandwiches. Sure, the "chest" pops out a bit more in a "muscular" type of way, but it's not unlike his other AU Gundam designs; a rather large torso.
I'm sure though the cockpit might be more palatable to those who probably couldn't get over the original aesthetics, which may have been Tomino's doing as opposed to Syd Mead's (which also applies for Turn X's design as well, though not many pay attention to the location of the cockpit and energy-draining device, let alone the aesthetics of the latter). But yeah; it now has a look akin to the Eagail's own cockpit.
Overall, I guess either it was for a project or some way to kill time. In any case, I wonder if Okawara could've stayed a bit truer to aesthetics while attempting to give his own spin and try to yeild better results. I remember that a redesign of Turn A that was credited to Katoki didn't seem so wide. Seems pretty consistent; some of Katoki's redesigns turn out sleeker, such as the Gundams from GW.
Mead was at his house, apparently. It was just posted as a bit of fun.
Personally, I really like Okawara as a designer; he can make the most insane ideas look feasible, but still keeps that "chunky" feel that I love so much.
That idea doesn't really mesh well with the Turn A, as that suit is supposed to be the epitome of MS evolution; there's no reason for it to be chunky, as its mechanisms have been streamlined to perfection.
Regardless, I still love seeing redesigns, so long as the originals are kept in their rightful place (Unlike this nonsense with Wing retconning).
PS. Katoki's Turn A redesign looks like somebody vomited after eating a spaghetti bolognese.
Still have to see a Turn-A redesign I like. I prefer the cleaner look of the original.
ReplyDeleteI've heard sometimes ago that Turn A actually has a 'Gundam face' beneath its giant mustache. Is that the one?
ReplyDeleteDear Okawara, please stop making Turn A Gundam less unique. k thx

ReplyDeleteI really liked the weird look. It made a lot of sense for something from that far in the future.
ReplyDeletePrefer the original still, but nice effort.
ReplyDeleteNo. Just no.
ReplyDeletePeople have come to accept Turn A for what it is. If Okawara wants to really turn it into a Gundam face, why not the V-fin?
enough okawara.. Enough.. somebody please stop him. #facepalm
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! I wish they'd make this into an RD
ReplyDeletemaybe they would use this redesign for a new kit, maybe an rg.. lol
ReplyDeleteNever thought I'll say this, but I actually like this over Katoki's redesign.
ReplyDeleteThe original was design by an American, or you mean Katoki has his own version of turn-a?
DeleteKatoki's got his own design.

Why can't you people just let the old guy have his fun?
