Gundam model builders & fighters compete for world championships in near-future story
Gundam Build Fighters, the newest Gundam TV series, was announced at today's "Gundam New Video Project" press conference. The series will air on TV Tokyo and affiliates beginning in October 2013.
Gundam Build Fighters tells the story of new battles fought by some of Gundam fans' favorite mobile suits, while letting new fans' taste for Gunpla carry them into enjoyment of a TV series.
The series will be directed by Kenji Nagasaki, assistant director of the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 TV series and movie, and written by Gundam 00 screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda.
Character designs have been created by Kenichi Ohnuki, an art director for Gundam SEED and later TV series, with assistance from Suzuhito Yasuda.

The star-studded mechanical design lineup includes Kunio Okawara. Junichi Akutsu, Junya Ishigaki, Kanetake Ebikawa, and Kenji Teraoka.

The series will feature not only new mecha designs, but also customized designs from previous Gundam projects such as Build Strike Gundam (Gundam Seed), Zaku Amazing (first Gundam), Wing Gundam Fenice (Gundam W), and Gundam X Maō (Gundam X). The anime will tie into an HG Build Fighters model kit line that encourages customization with the accompanying HG Build Custom line of accessories.

STORY:
The near future.
Years after the huge "Gunpla"-plastic models based on the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam-boom of the 1980s.
A second Gunpla boom is taking the world by storm, fueled by the revolutionary new ability to pilot your own Gunpla creations in "Gunpla Battles". These incredibly-popular Battles culminate in a yearly global tournament.
Our hero Sei Iori, is a young Gunpla builder who dreams of someday making it to the world champonships. An only child whose family owns a model shop, his talent is well-honed, but his weak piloting abilities have led to a series of first-round losses.
Then, one day, he meets a boy named Reiji whose piloting skills are incredible. Together as a team, they take on the world!
Sei, the Gunpla Builder.
Reiji, the Gunpla Fighter.
Sei builds, Reiji fights.
Together, they're the Build Fighters!
Their dream is to make it to the Gunpla Battle World Championship... and ein!

BATTLE SYSTEM:
Gunpla Battles are conducted using the Battle System.
When a completed Gunpla and a "GP Base" containing its build data are placed within the Build System, it begins to emit "Plavsky particles".
These particles, discovered a decade before Gunpla Build Fighters takes place, react with the Gunpla's plastic, allowing it to be piloted externally.
The particles also apply a realistic effect to beams, explosives, and more, giving Gunpla Battles all the excitement and impact of real combat.
The existence of Plavsky particles breathes life into Gunpla, letting them take part in the ultimate Gunpla Battle!
CHARACTERS:

The story is set in the near future when GunPla Battles, competitions that pit Gundam plastic models against each other, have become popular worldwide in the "Second GunPla Boom." Sei Iori (pictured above), a first-year middle-school student and the only son of a model shop owner, is talented at building GunPla, but inexperienced in the GunPla Battles. He encounters a mysterious boy named Reiji (pictured below) who happens to be an accomplished Gundam Fighter. Together, they strive for the GunPla Battle world championships. Sei's customized GunPla is the Build Strike Gundam (pictured above).
Other characters include Tatsuya Yūki (pictured below), the model club president and resident campus "idol" at Sei's school. He is talented at both GunPla building and GunPla Battles, and he already placed in the last GunPla Battle world championships. His nickname is the "Crimson Comet," and his GunPla of choice is the Zaku Amazing.

China Kōsaka (pictured below) is a first-year school girl at Sei's academy and a member in both the class council and art club. Her family runs the Kōsaka restaurant.
Kenji Nagasaki (No. 6) is directing off scripts supervised by Yousuke Kuroda (Gundam 00). Kenichi Ohnuki (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed C.E.73: Stargazer, Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time – A Tale of the Eight Guardians, Garzey's Wing) is designing the characters in collaboration with Suzuhito Yasuda (Yozakura Quartet, Durarara!!, Devil Survivor 2 The Animation). The mecha designer roster includes Kunio Okawara, Junichi Akutsu, Junya Ishigaki, Kanetake Ebikawa, and Kenji Teraoka.
In addition to the model lines, the digital card game Gundam Try Age will add Gundam Build Fighters via a Build MS 3-Dan update in Japanese arcades this fall. The Gundam Breaker game for PlayStation 3 will also tie into the concept of customizable mobile suits.

  1. soo..
basically they just lazy to create another gundam series
then reuse all previous gundams instead..

why not reuse kira yamato instead (lol).

they should also reuse the pilot, not only the gundam..

    1. with the amount of gunpla floating around nowadays, this is a great choice in a new series.

Also, I think we've had enough Gary Stu's in Gundam as it is.

      Delete
    2. People are also not realizing, I think, the potential this has for new model kit releases... using a show like this, no design becomes obscure enough to not make, as they can easily feature it in the show...

    3. True, HGUC Victory mass production MS + HGCC kits please.

  2. Oh gawd, maybe it's just me but, Build Strike looks amazingly retarded in design. -_-

    1. Build strike is just a custom build derived from other Gunpla models. Of course it's gonna look funky at first.

Hopefully the series will begin to make a name/icon for the Build Strike within the show.

    1. And what's wrong with kiddy Gundam show? Ain't it good to make fans for many generation?

Being serious and realistic is good for Gundam, but it's not all for. And as Gunpla is being famous around the world, this should be dream of many fans who like Gunpla.

      Delete
    2. Gundam has always been "kiddy" since the moment it aired back in 1979. There's no way a kid piloting a brightly-colored red, white and blue robot cannot be considered "kiddy".

I can admit I LIKE to watch 30min toy commercials about giant robots made for Japanese children without having to justify to myself or my friends that it's "mature". You shouldn't be ashamed either.

    3. @Izzuera
      you close minded twat...

      Delete
    4. @Izzuera tl;dr anime is serious business!!!!!

    5. Gundam was conceptually a show for young adults, not kids. The Gundam being coloured like a flag was an editorial mandate to sell toys, not Tomino's original idea. This is one reason why the G-3, which was originally intended to replace Amuro's RX-78-2 like in the novel, is various shades of blue and gray like military air force planes.
Regardless, this doesn't mean Gundam has to be a kid's show just because some people think that's all it is. While most Gundam series can be watched by kids, they're not the demographic. Young adults with cash to spare and jobs are typically the demographic that buys more Gunpla, the real warhorse of Bandai's Gundam cashcow.

      Delete
    6. Can't Gundam be for both kids and young adults? It's not like this show and AGE mean Gundam is now only for the kiddies. There is still Unicorn and the upcoming Origin for everyone else.

      Delete
    7. omg pls tell me about how mature you are

  6. FINALLY, a Gundam series that knows how to be FUN again!

As much as I liked some of the previous series, I'm kinda worn out by all the SERIOUS BUSINESS. This looks like it will be a pleasure to watch :)

  7. Meh. Danball senki lbx already came up with this story line. Jeeez they are making gundam age look good with this ugly idea.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep pretty much its just danball senki with gunpla >_< im sorry but what is the point.

      Delete
    2. The "point" is to have an excuse to re-release a bunch old Gundam designs and have kids from this generation willing to buy them. I'm not complaining since I've been waiting forever for an HG Double X.

      Delete
    3. Gundam's not popular with Japanese kids, but danball senki is. Bandai is a toy company and they're missing the core toy market with their more mature content, the kids. I guess they're willing to alienate their older fans to attempt to target the younger crowd, considering this is their second attempt.

      Delete
    4. Exactly. Once those old, fat otaku die off, Bandai's gonna need a new source of income to keep the company afloat (the truth hurts lol).

      Delete
    5. Older fans will keep buying UC, AC, and CE stuff anyways (yeah, SEED kids are older now) and a lot of those same fans will keep whining about every new series that comes out that isn't from their favorite timelines.

And this is the perfect way for Bandai to sell old G merchandise to new audiences. Plus, with the modified Strike at the center of this new series, I can't help but think they're trying to use this to get kids to buy incoming Seed and Seed Destiny remastered kits as well as cheaply "customized" kits such as that Strike Rouge Flamboyant from the other post.

      Delete
    6. Danbooru Senki came up with this "story line"? I'm sure that there are many anime and manga series that have similar themes and story line to LBX even before LBX existed.

Its not even released yet. I find the disappointment and complains completely invalid. If its out and you have watched it, dont fancy it or the series is bad, then you opinions would be completely valid.

As with anon 4:25, LBX is really popular in Japan. Bandai produces the kits for LBX too. They are trying to bring Gundam and Gunpla to the new generation.

Kid start with LBX, maybe move on to Gundam BF and to the rest of the Gundam universe. This is but a gateway for the new generation to 35 years of Gundam history. (not to mention the higher grade kits, HG RG MG PG)

Its just a way to propagate model building, a hobby that is fading away.

      Delete
    7. (waves walking stick) All you kids today and your fancy iphone builder app! Back in my day, we had to build our models. With our HANDS!

      Delete
    8. I dont get it, y they are making Gundam more "kiddy", G Gundam Fighters, and Wing were popular as hell in the 90s, kids to all ages!!! And they had both the epic seriousness and appeal to children buying their toys, models and etc... and for the older audience to watch.

      Delete
    9. Popular where? In Japan G and Wing had respectable ratings but nowhere near the success like in the west. As for the "kiddy" part, what's to say this show won't be as epic or enjoyable to a new generation of kids? I think you're letting nostalgia cloud your judgement.

      Delete
    10. Times change, tastes change, styles change. Having a center parting was all the rave too in the 90s, everybody had one. But now you can hardly find somebody sporting one.

Is pokemon not kiddy? But doesnt it still appeal to people from young to old? Yes, Gundam series of past may have touched on more serious themes but as mentioned, times and taste change.

Just look at western comics, Marvel, DC etc. Their characters have to change with the times as well.

The world now is very much different from the world then. Kids now a days go through content much quicker. Would they have the time and patience to sit through politics and war talk? I dont know.

Anyway, they still got the other projects like Unicorn, The origin, and G-Reko. So maybe they are just diversifying and expanding their overall audience.

      Delete
    11. The reason gundam franchise can't change calmly because fans itself who can't accept change of concept of theme. They only looking at past (UC) so when there's a bit change of element in new series they'll judge it suck, bad, and other bad things, just look at 00 movie and AGE. To much nostalgia will make us can't look at present event future.

      Delete
    12. Nostalgia is killing the appeal of Gundam tbh. Fans seriously want YET ANOTHER UC rehash than an original idea like this? This kind of attitude makes me sick.

      Delete
    13. ^Kinda weird since in Gundam, there's always the theme about something new (either pilot or revolutionary MS) being introduced into the system fighting one or more organizations that represent old concepts/technologies/ideologies.

      Delete
    14. Sorry, but Plamo Kyo Shiro did this before Danball Senki did. Maybe you've heard of it, it's where the Perfect Gundam's from.

  26. Really enjoyed Gunpla Builders, that was just a fun. Serious Gundam shows are good too, but sometimes let's just have fun with a show and not get bogged down on the space opera part.

For those comparing Danball Senki to this, didn't Gunpla Builders come out first? So we win? Besides, it's not like this concept hasn't been done numerous times before those shows.

This is just smart to leverage all those existing kits that are already out and present them in a new light.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So Sunrise/Bandai is now producing a new anime series for the sole purpose of promoting new combiner gunpla kits. I am ok with it, since I only watch old school UC era series and buy old school UC era kits. Yes I am old, but I know better. If gundam is Music, then UC is Queen. Wing/Seed are Backstreet Boys, and AGE and this new stuff are Justin Bieber and 1 Direction.

  28. ...the atmosphere here is unusually positive for the announcement of a new Gundam series. Is this the dawn of new age for Gundam fandom?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well... hardcore elitists and "...haters/...fags" will still exist. But I guess many people understand that the show is about Gunpla and model building. And that this is about bringing Gunpla to a new generation and encouraging people to build and customise their kits.

Hopefully it is a new age for Gundam fandom.

Bandai Namco has clearly shown that this project is about diversifying their overall audience. Because they still have the other 3 projects: Unicorn, The origin and G-reko for fans to choose from. Gundam is not limited to just one timeline or one series. It is made up of every one of these series.

This would be refreshing to some fans and a nice departure from the "same old". There might be "easter eggs" and homages to all the previous series (in the PV launching from the Albion).

I guess some people see that in this series, there is a little for everyone. From the refreshing change in story line, to the addition and revival of previous Gundams, to the introduction of long awaited model kits, etc.

If done right, it can also attract and generate interest in model building for females as well.

besides the reason Gundam never "dies" is because they are Machines constantly evolving and adapting to the times,
the same way that classic fan fiction Gundam Beast could someday become a real series n such therefore the continuing "evolution" of Gundam may still be here after we have long passed and then some
