Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt - Anime Series Announced!

The anime will have a total of four episodes. The first episode will be available digitally on December 25 starting at 12 p.m. in Japan (December 24 at 10:00 p.m. EST). The first episode will be available via an EST (Electronic Sell Through) service that will allow purchasers to download the episode. The website notes that this is the first time a Gundam series will be available via this method. Those interested can purchase the first 18-minute episode along with a special bonus video titled "Ichinen Sensō ni Idonda Mono-tachi ~Documentary of Thunderbolt #1" (Those Who Challenged the One-Year War ~Documentary of Thunderbolt~ #1) for 500 yen (about US$4). The documentary is listed as being approximately 10 minutes long.
The episode on its own will also be available via a rental video-on-demand service for 250 yen (US$2). The website has not yet revealed the territories the anime will be available in, or if Sunrise will release the anime with English subtitles or an English audio track. Sunrise will also reveal the services that will sell/rent the anime at a later date.
Those who have a subscription to the Gundam Fan Club app will be able to purchase the episode starting on December 11 at 12:00 p.m. in Japan.

The Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt trailer will be shown at the theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN II Artesia's Sorrow starting Oct 31st in selected theaters in Japan.
Story Synopsis:
Universal Century 0079. Federation troops and Zeon forces carry out a fierce battle in the "Thunderbolt Sector" in what was once Side 4 "Mua". The "Thunderbolt Sector" is a shoal zone composed of the debris of destroyed space colonies, named for the electrical discharges from the metal debris. MS pilot Io Flemming is among the Federation soldiers who are dispatched to the area, where Zeon sniper Daryl Lorenz awaits them on the battlefield.

ビッグコミックスペリオールで好評連載中の『機動戦士ガンダム サンダーボルト』のアニメ化が決定し、本日10月28日（木）にティザーサイトが公開された。
『機動戦士ガンダム サンダーボルト』は、宇宙マンガの最前線を突き進む太田垣康男先生が、スペースコロニーや戦艦の残骸が大量に舞う暗礁宙域・通称“サンダーボルト宙域”を舞台に、新たなる一年戦争を描く話題作として2012年3月に連載がスタート。
コミックスは第5集まで刊行中、最新第6集は10月30日（金）発売予定。また、バンダイからはHGシリーズのガンプラも発売されている。
宇宙のリアルを詰め込んだ独特のメカニクス、2人のエースパイロット「イオ・フレミング」と「ダリル・ローレンツ」をはじめとする骨太なキャラクター、驚愕のメカ描写による圧巻の戦闘シーン。果たしてどのような映像になるのだろうか。
興味は尽きないが随時発表予定の詳細を期待して待とう。

DeleteLooking at the responses, I want to set something straight: I like UC, I like it a lot. I simply prefer that Sunrise do something during the Late-UC timeline because there's so much untapped potential there, not to mention more room for creative storytelling. For example: the Cosmo Babylonia conflict, the Zanscare Empire, CONSENT. These are all interesting ideas that have gone criminally unexplored.
DeleteI haven't read the Thunderbolt, it could be great but that isn't my point. My point is: the One Year War setting has been done to death already. Putting a new spin on familiar events doesn't change the final outcome (Zeon loses), especially when we've seen it from a dozen different angles already. It reeks of Sunrise taking taking the easy way out instead of trying something truly new.
For a timeline with such a rich history to draw from, I just think UC deserves so much more...

There is a lot of untapped potential within the late-UC era that bandai ignores just because on the fact it might fail. It doesnt help that some of the fans cant accept everything else not zeon/ efsf and most series in the UC verse has a massive boner for the early UC timeline.
Thunderbolts a great manga/series and all but come on bandai We love uc as much as the next guy do but at least move away from the OYW/Z/ZZ/CCA/UC times and make something amazing from the late guys too.
Then start reading thunderbolt it's UC story that doesn't follow the conventional route, it's probably one of the grittiest Gundam series that's ever came out. Like 08th MS team but with very complex characters and a distinct story. Accompanied by the Jazz sound track it's going to be a fresh entry in this post modern Gundam new age BS.

Delete@Hiruma - it is arguably UC, but it's technically AU: some of the technology, ms designs, and events are slightly different. There were also scenes that showed Char's zaku II, and it featured sub arms as well.

ReplyDeleteLike that will turn out perfect..... There are going to have some inconsistencies if they do it. Look at older series. Sometimes the key frame drawings look odd. They apparently learned from this and decided to incorporate CGI along with the moving frame.

I definitely am a UC junkie and I hate build fighters and age to the core, so a thunderbolt ova might be refreshing. lets just hope they don't fuck it up.

ReplyDeleteAt last sunrise/bandai realize their biggest audience are mature/shonen audience. I hope the director & writer of the anime faithful to the story of the manga. The manga story is so gritty. IO - Daryl rivalry is one of the most epic rivalry in UC...IMHO.
