ReplyDeleteWth already??? This look like POWER
ReplyDeleteOh god....I think I'm dropping this. I think I'm gonna come across as a fanboy here, but hear me out before you dismiss me:
ReplyDeleteI thought this was going to be Gundam: The Origin The Anime, which meant an anime version of the entire manga: Amuro, RX-78, Amuro vs. Char, adult Sayla and Char, Odessa, Jaburo, GMs, Operation Star-One, everything!...not this. I felt this way when this was announced, but then I felt I could understand wanting to go more linear and start with Char and Sayla as kids, which would make sense because the development of the main story with the war and Char's revenge begins there, then moving onto the main story when they're adults and the focus shifts to add Amuro and the White Base crew. I thought by doing that it would make it feel different, and we wouldn't have to deal with one Origin movie that was all backstory; that would make alot of sense. But now, after the release of Origin I, and the trailer for Origin II and what that will be, my first impressions from the announcement just is if not will be my feelings on this whole thing.
It seems to be just an anime adaptation of the backstory from The Origin, and that is a huge problem. First of all, you are calling it Gundam: The Origin, and it is The Origin: the backstory, sure, it came from The Origin; also there's the Guntank and the other mecha from that take's version of them, this is obviously The Origin: but they're treating it like something else, and that is a major issue. It's almost like, if not ultimately what they're going to do, it feels like a prequel series, which begs the question: prequel to what? There is no way, shape, or form, that they could if not want to connect this to the main UC canon, because it would never fit and it doesn't belong there. The Origin is the manga retelling, its own thing, version of the original MSG; anyone would think that for obviously great no-brainer reasons. If they wanted to just tell the backstory to MSG, then they should have called this something else. Calling it The Origin made me and others think it's the anime version of the whole manga; but if it's this, its misleading and overall wrong.
And if its a prequel to The Origin itself, what sense does that make because this is a 4-part episodic movie series, and if backstory is all what its going to be, will there be an announcement of a Gundam: The Origin full theatrical movie that these four episodes were leading towards? I doubt it, regardless of wanting that to be the case, because a) they didn't suggest that was going to happen, and b) once this is over, we're most likely if not definitely going to be done, and they're move onto the new project. So again, I ask: what is this a prequel to?
The other complaint I have is, this is not what I nor any fan who wanted The Origin to be animated wanted with this final product. Will we get the main story? Well, they have two more episodes after Origin II, but I doubt it because I don't feel that's the direction of these things. Origin I was the first half of Volume 5, and Origin II seems to be that volume's second half; if that's the case, Origin III & IV will only cover Volumes 6-7, leaving no other room for the rest. It makes me want my movie theory to be true, but alas, my initial impressions from the announcement are true: I'm not liking this at all, this is a bad direction, this is not what I wanted from an Origin anime, and I'm dropping this.
Could something happen that could change my mind? Of course, but there is a lot of doubt
I like this idea better. I mean most of us already know what happens in Gundam. Expanding on the universe of Gundam is preferable to retelling something we already know. After all the manga was enjoyable on it's own, it doesn't really need to be animated. Also seems like they'll be expanding on more than just Char and Sayla. I think this has a lot of potential. Just my opinion.
Deleteits just like X-men origins, one for wolverine, one for the Mutant-high. and then another wolverine movie. franchising.
Deletewhat he said ^, char & sayla. Amuro is not much, maybe his dad is but hes just some science person. but there's much more happening on Char's side of the story, politics wise, and etc. if only the the newtype topic can be explored too.
But Gundam: The Origin is not just the backstory, its yes a remake of the original series, but its retelling has found itself to have much more of a connection with later UC works from Zeta, 0083, and Unicorn. And what I recent realized: I love the MSG Novels for how real world, gritty, and how much more of a war drama it is, and The Origin blends that with the original.
DeleteSo along with what I just said above, and what I just said now, its more reason why I'm disappointed why The Origin anime is this and why it really shouldn't be if it has that title.
Personally I'm very happy that the adaptation starts with the flashback, rather than retreading Old ground. The Origin dose not change much of the over arching story except to masterfully reedit events in order to create a more coherent and entertaining story. The flashback is entirely new and introduces people to what the universal century was like just prior to the one year war, allowing us to get to how all the characters got where they were when the war started and it lays down the origins of Char's merciless vendetta against any one who crosses him.
DeleteI'm guessing that Bandi is using this series to test the waters to see if a full version of the Origin is wanted by the fans. If the series does well we will probably see it continued in some form. If we don't I will be glade that we managed to at least get a couple of extremely faithful adaptations of the manga. Seriously Origin 1 practically followed the manga panel for panel.
You have to look at from Sunrise's point of view... which is ultimately money. And cost vs profit.
DeleteThey're testing the waters to see how this sells. It's easier to commit to a few OVA episodes to see how the market reacts as opposed to a full 52 episode series. They're well-aware how well regarded the manga is, and that the audience would settle for nothing less than full quality for a series. That's a lotta moolah.
Sure, you could say they'd make money based on the kits and other merch... but frankly they can release all the kits from origin and any other merch without animating a single episode of the same series.
All in all, this is Sunrise/Bandai dipping their toes, and who knows if they'll continue for a full series afterwards or not.
0/10 made me reply
DeleteWe knew it was going to be like a long time ago... The OVAs they are doing account for a period int he manga where they go back and fill in Char's backstory. A remade Gundam 0079 would be amazing, but your wall of text is more of a "hate it cos it's not what I thought" which is an err on research on your part. Now, criticism of the show itself would be more welcome...
DeleteI really don't think Sunrise needs to test the waters to find out if another UC series will sell. Especially one based off The Origin (i.e. set during the OYW, and shortly after). There are millions of Gundam fans out there that would kill for a chance to see the source content re-animated, and there are plenty more that have never even watched the original series solely due to its age.
DeleteRelative to the Gundam franchise, I'm fairly young. Most of my friends are in their early early-mid 20's and, out of all of them, I'm the only one that has ever watched the original series. Why? Because it looks like horse-shit when compared to modern animation. I love Gundam as much as the next guy, and the entire UC timeline is still my favorite, but I can't honestly expect people to watch the original series at this point in time without having ever seen it before. Gundam can't survive as a franchise without introducing younger generations to what made Gundam the world-wide hit that it currently is. Shows like Build Fighters might sell to both Gundam fans and non-fans, but, 20 years from now, people won't think back to 2014 and exclaim "Wow! Build Fighters had such a strong impact on my life! Those were the golden years!".
Since Sunrise doesn't seem to be willing to commit to creating another long running universe, that isn't designed solely to sell Bandai's merch, it's imperative that they bring the original Gundam to a new generation(s). So, I'm not entirely sure what Sunrise is doing with this movie series. If they're using it to lead into a full The Origin series, great. If they're doing anything else, then they should probably consider hiring some new blood into their staff.
Sorry to ask, but will this series OVA will only be about Char and Artesia, or They will retell the original anime story ?
