Japan's Ministry of Finance Staffer Arrested for Uploading Gundam UC Video


Tochigi Prefectural Police arrested Osamu Hoshi (43-year-old staff member of the Ministry of Finance's Kanto Finance Bureau) in Tokyo on Wednesday.  He is suspected of violating Japan's Copyright Law on unauthorized public transmission. The suspect is being accused of uploading Sunrise's Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and other anime videos to the FC2 video-sharing site. The suspect is said to have admitted to the charges, atating he wanted to share Gundam to other people. Reportedly, he uploaded about 400 anime video files.

  1. On this guy's defense of "... [wanting] to share Gundam to other people...", it is understandable; especially considering that the Gundam franchise and IP is pretty much a Japan exclusive thing, even though anime and manga as a form of art, literature, and entertainment is something that is enjoyed worldwide.

    The problem is that he uploaded it without authorization from Bandai and Sunrise.

    You know, things like this wouldn't happen if Sunrise and Bandai worked harder and more actively to bring Gundam as a franchise and all of its associated products to countries like the US.
