I think I saw that he carved and sanded down the head from a flat, featureless resin cube, without anything but a pencil outline and the old 1/144 kit for reference.
I think I saw on his Twitter a while back that he also made a smaller, more proportionate head for them, but when he asked which head everyone preferred, it seemed that more people (himself included) liked the original larger head better, and that's what we see here. Considering how it was made, I think it's still pretty damned impressive.
Oh god the head is just awkward... It hurts me right in the childhood :'( Especially since this is my favorite MS.
