I've just re-discovered the existence of...Hmmm. I've just re-discovered the existence of these fake Gunpla models from China. As early as 2000 though, I remember some really awful Gundam models that came out of Taiwan that were so bad you needed two kits to make one. Missing parts, undershot moldings, etc. But I gather that the latest offerings from China are really good. Rancor aside, what's really driving this bootleg stuff is the shear cost of a plastic model from Japan. Back in 1983, when the dollar was strong in relation to the yen, a 3,000 yen kit was $30.00 US in an American hobby shop. That allowed for shipping, wholesale distribution and mark up. Everyone was happy. At the same time, few kits where as expensive as they are now coming out of Bandai. Never really saw anything more than 2500 yen for a Master Grade kit until recent years. Oil, the chief ingredient for styrene bead plastic, is more expensive than 30 years ago, so that could explain why the kits have jumped in price domestically. Another reason could be that Bandai simply got greedy. Gundam is it's best property right now, and

I'm kind of bothered by that because their anime plamodel line used to be more diverse. I talking Space Cruiser Yamato, Captain Harlock, Macross, and other mecha based anime kits they made or still have the molds for from the 1980s. But I digress. The exchange rate relative to the yen and most currencies make importing Bandai Gunpla into some Asian countries (European too for that matter)prohibitively expensive when you factor in shipping and duties. So these cheaper knock offs are fulfilling a demand for people who want the kits but cant afford the prices. They are hugely popular in the Philippines, where even the knock offs are out of reach to kids and adults with no steady income.

That being said, if Bandai really wanted to stop the flood of knock off models in SE Asia, they could do so by easily setting up shops in say, Manila, and making the prices affordable. They did this in Korea, where there are official outlets and made Academy one of their official distributors. Before this, Academy unabashedly produced Gundam kits that were of good quality and supremely affordable thanks to the won exchange rate of the day. This is not case today. Same for Taiwan.

On the legal front, Bandai is a big enough corporation to send in the lawyers IF they really wanted to protect their copyright. It's not enough to excite the modelers to stand with their product and shame others from buying boots. But to a Filipino teen, with 3000 pesos from Tito, it's off to Divisoria to buy four kits instead of one :-)

Yell as you might, these kits will be around for a while until the next big thing. And I find the allegation that Chinese plastic might be cancerous is rather spurious. Reminds me of the tag line about SM CDs supporting child prostitution and the triads.

Just build em and have fun guys.... In my Country the original Bandai plamos cost up to 2-2.5 times the original price while bootleg only cost 1/6 of these marked up price. But even a 4000 Yen original MG, an average person in my country would need 1/3 of their monthly wage to afford which is why bootleg becomes appealing choices.

It is not merely matter of choice when people get bootlegs but also because of circumstances one of them is economic inequality. In the late 90s when Gundam wing was on cartoon network you could actually buy gundams in some places here. In the last maybe 10 years all model shops certainly in my county have shut due to the economic strain (not that they had gundams but it would have been the best place to look for them).
You can buy them online and import them from japan, which seems cheap enough.
